The Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to build and lead our HR function and support our growing team. Reporting to the Head of Finance, this role will oversee all aspects of human resources, including employee relations, organizational development, performance management, benefits administration, compliance with relevant regulations, and talent acquisition. This role will be instrumental in fostering our unique company culture, driving employee engagement, and aligning HR strategies with business objectives. The Director of Human Resources will serve as a trusted advisor to the executive team on all people-related matters.

What you’ll do:

  • Employee Relations: Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership and employees, resolving conflicts, promoting positive workplace relationships, and ensuring a supportive work environment
  • Performance Management: Design and manage performance evaluation systems, including goal-setting, feedback, and professional development programs including training initiatives and career path planning
  • Compensation & Benefits: Support the design and administration of competitive compensation structures and benefits programs, ensuring alignment with industry standards and compliance with regulations.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local labor laws, including California-specific regulations, as well as industry-specific compliance requirements in the med tech sector. Create and maintain HR policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • HR Information Systems: Evaluate, implement and manage HR information systems to enable a sustainable infrastructure for employee data
  • HR Metrics & Reporting: Utilize data-driven insights to assess HR initiatives, track key performance indicators, and report on workforce trends to senior leadership
  • Talent Acquisition & Retention: Oversee recruitment efforts to attract top talent in the med tech industry, including sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding processes. Design retention strategies to maintain a high-performing workforce
  • Organizational Development: Lead initiatives to enhance organizational structure, workforce planning, and leadership development to support scalability and innovation. Partner with department leaders to assess organizational development needs and implement appropriate solutions

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • SHRM-SCP or SPHR certification strongly preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and California employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, EEOC, OSHA)
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems and data analytics
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Strategic thinking with a hands-on approach to problem-solving
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate with leadership
  • Experience scaling HR functions in a growth-stage company preferred
  • Ability to work in a hybrid work environment, working onsite in Santa Cruz on average 2-3 days a week
